Budget 2026: Immigration headlines
The Government has announced a package of measures in the Budget 2026 designed to make the UK more attractive to highly skilled workers, international graduates and researchers, with an ambition to create the most pro-business migration system in Europe for high-skilled workers.
From spring 2027, occupation-specific minimum salary requirements for Skilled Workers will be reduced from the median wage to the 25th percentile, while the general salary threshold will be updated in line with wage data. For some employers, this could make international recruitment viable for a wider range of roles.
The High Potential Individual route will also be expanded to applicants with eligible qualifications from the world’s top 150 institutions, alongside an increase in the cap. The Graduate route will be extended to two years for graduates of high-compliance universities demonstrating strong labour market outcomes.
Further flexibility will be introduced for highly skilled sponsored workers who unexpectedly lose their jobs. From 2027, eligible workers will have up to six months to find alternative employment following the end of their sponsorship.
Together with the continuing development of the Global Talent route, these measures point to a more targeted approach. While the Government continues to tighten some areas of immigration, it also appears keen to attract people with skills and experience it considers particularly valuable to the UK economy.
One notable omission is a route specifically aimed at international investors.
