Green light from HMRC, red light on speed: Inheritance Tax clearance update

Despite some speculation, the Treasury has confirmed that HMRC is still accepting and processing IHT clearance applications – albeit very slowly. Thanks to Daniel Aldridge MP for asking the question.

While turnaround times for HMRC issuing the unique codes needed to finalise grant applications (where an estate does not meet the excepted estate criteria) have improved, delays in other areas of the administration of estates persist.

It remains important to manage expectations around timelines for every stage of the estate administration process.

Although positive steps have been taken in some areas, for example quicker turnaround times by HMCTS probate when dealing with online grant applications and HMRC being more efficient with issuing unique codes, significant delays remain in other parts of the process, which includes finalising the IHT position with HMRC.
